Teens

Teens Program (14 through High School Graduation) prepares teens for life after high school and self-advocacy skills and transition goals are imperative for a visually impaired teen.

Teens Program (14 through High School Graduation)

Transition services are provided to youth aged 14 through high school graduation currently served by the school system under a Transition Individualized Education Plan (TIEP). The Lighthouse uses an expanded core curriculum, which supplements the TIEP, and extends into career exploration, vocational training, independent living skills, advocacy skills, and recreation. The program provides orientation and mobility so the teen can navigate their environment safely and efficiently.

The Transition program provides students with skills and experience to facilitate a successful transition from high school to post-secondary activities, such as college, vocational school, and employment. Through summer work programs, job coaching, and assistive technology training, transition services promote personal and professional advancement and help teens compete with their sighted peers and achieve future self-sufficiency.

Independent Living Skills instruction promotes independence. These necessary activities include cooking, future planning, learning strategies, the use of remaining vision, orientation, mobility, problem solving, social skills, and work exploration. The transitions program encourages students to reach their goals and build their confidence.

Transition services allow participants to develop positive self-esteem, independence, and employability skills.
