Adults

The Adult Blind and Visually Impaired programs focus on providing skills necessary for the individual to live healthy, happy, productive lives.

  • Independent Living Skills (ILS)

Once a person loses their vision, they need to relearn how to take care of  themselves as independently as possible.

Relearning how to navigate the world is vital to maintaining independence, despite vision loss or blindness.

  • SOCIAL Programs

    Focus Club

Focus Club is a monthly gathering offering socialization, support, education, awareness, advocacy, and peer interaction. Educational speakers are often invited to present information on various topics.

    Book Club

Book Club discusses various types of books chosen by the members. Sometimes it is a best seller, sometimes it is a classic. We read fiction and non-fiction.

    Boot Up Club

Boot Up Club is a computer social club for people who are legally blind. Participants engage in group discussions and demonstrations of devices and software on technology for people who are blind or who have low vision.

    Activity Club

Activity Club plans various fun, productive, and beneficial activities with proven benefits for both physical and mental health.

  • Counseling and Self-Advocacy Skills

Adjusting to vision loss can be challenging for anyone. Even with the best support and resources, it is natural to experience depression, anxiety, concerns, and stress in response to major life changes. Support groups and counseling services are offered for adjustment to blindness issues. If issues beyond the scope of vision loss arise, we may make referrals and recommendations for counseling services outside of the Lighthouse.

    “New Visions” Support Group

The “New Visions” support group is available to help individuals learn coping skills to help them adjust to their vision loss. This group is structured, but also individualized, to meet client needs and goals. Clients can:

    1. Receive and give emotional support and encouragement.
    2. Gain information for living well with vision loss.
    3. Practice new skills related to emotions, communication, lifestyle, and “INSIGHT” Discussion Group

    Individual Counseling

For those who prefer a one-on-one approach, rather than a group setting, individual counseling for adjustment to blindness is available.

  • Assistive Technology Instruction

The assistive technology training team provides demonstrations, assessments and evaluations, presentations, and training on a variety of assistive technology devices designed for people with visual impairments. The primary function of this program is to provide technology instruction for people with visual impairments to empower them to use mainstream and specialized devices to meet their independent living, vocational, and recreational goals.

  • Orientation and Mobility

Helping people regain safety, confidence, and independence in travel is a key component of our services because a full and active life depends on it.

The Lighthouse provides orientation and mobility instruction to clients who need it regardless of their age. Orientation and Mobility empower people by assisting them to gain independence and confidence.

  • Aids and Appliances Store

Shopping for vision aids can be a daunting experience so we try to make things easy for our clients. We offer an Aids and Appliances Store that carries a small sampling of products and adaptive devices designed for persons with visual impairments to make tasks of daily living easier.
